UFCW's $36 Million Sell-Out Settlement
UFCW members who work at Loblaws, Zehrs and Fortinos supermarkets across Ontario have begun voting on a tentative collective bargaining settlement that has been two years in the making.
The terms of the tentative deal, posted on the web site of UFCW Local 1977, are similar in many respects to a proposal that the UFCW rejected in 2005.
The most significant gains appear to be for the union itself and include a $36 million contribution by the company to the UFCW's troubled pension plan, a five cents per hour worked (by each member) contribution to its training and education fund and a further one cent per hour worked donation to its dental trust.
Stay tuned for a fuller analysis of yet another great feat of UFCW bargaining.
