Guy Fawkes Rules!

Written by Chris Budgell Friday, 03 March 2006

In November 1605 a plot to destroy the British Houses of Parliament with thirty-six barrels of gunpowder hidden in the cellar was thwarted at the last moment.

Four hundred years later, British Columbia's MLA's are demonstrating that you don't need explosives to incapacitate a parliament. Political cynicism and the indifference of the public and the press are succeeding where Guy Fawkes and his co-conspirators failed.

In November 2005 B.C.'s 79 MLA's each received a copy of a letter that was simultaneously posted on the Internet. The letter presents the evidence that another conspiracy has already succeeded in usurping the exclusive mandate of the Legislature to represent the citizens of the province, resulting in a law designed specifically to deny them access to justice.

Several months later none of those MLA's have responded to or even acknowledged receipt of that letter. Additional correspondence sent by registered mail, to the Premier, the Attorney General, the Minister of Labour, and the Leader of the Opposition has also been ignored.

The fact that no one will respond to such a serious charge speaks for itself. In the next provincial election these same politicians will be asking once again for a mandate to represent us. Let us hope by that time they have demonstrated a commitment to honour that mandate.
